Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Slot Machine Explained: Rules, Features and Variants

Bao Zhu Zhao Fu translates roughly as "firecrackers bring fortune," and it is Aristocrat's take on the Hold & Spin format. Most games in that genre give you one bonus. This one has three, and its defining trick is that two or all three can run on the same spin.

It is also not a single game. Bao Zhu Zhao Fu online is a series of four titles sharing one engine, and which of them a casino stocks varies. This Jackpot Sounds review covers how the mechanics work, what the jackpot tiers actually are, and which variants appear where.

The 95.40% figure is a long-term theoretical average calculated across an enormous number of spins. It describes the game's design, not any individual session.

How to Play Bao Zhu Zhao Fu

Bao Zhu Zhao Fu slot reels with firecracker feature symbols and jackpot values
The Bao Zhu Zhao Fu base game uses a 5×3 reel layout with 25 fixed paylines, while coloured firecracker symbols can activate the Ultra Spins, Double Up and Extra Spins features.

The base game is a conventional 5x3 grid with 25 fixed paylines and an Asian Festival theme: firecrackers, phoenixes, turtles and coin symbols.

Every spin costs a fixed 48 credits. Changing your bet level changes what each credit is worth, not how many credits a spin costs, and not which features are available. A spin at the minimum has access to exactly the same features as a spin at the maximum. What changes is the cash value of anything you win, and the cash value of anything you lose.

The Hold & Spin trigger works the way the format normally does. Land enough cash symbols on a spin and they lock in place, and you get a set number of respins to add more. Each new symbol that lands resets the counter. When the counter reaches zero, you collect the total of everything held.

What makes this version different is what happens to that basic structure once the firecrackers get involved.

The Three Hold & Spin Features

Bao Zhu Zhao Fu runs three separate modifications to the standard Hold & Spin round. Which one you get depends on the firecracker symbols that trigger it.

Ultra Spins

Cash symbol values are boosted at random during the round. A symbol that lands showing one value can have that value increased before the round ends, so the total you are watching accumulate is not fixed until it finishes.

Double Up

The grid splits into two identical boards running simultaneously, which raises the number of positions to fill from 15 to 30. Every symbol that lands counts toward both boards.

This feature derives from Aristocrat's earlier Mighty Cash Double Up, and it is the most visually obvious of the three because the screen physically divides.

Extra Spins

The respin counter resets at 4 instead of 3. That is a single extra respin, but it applies every time a new symbol resets the counter, so across a long round it compounds into meaningfully more chances to add symbols.

Bonus Boost: Combining Them

The multi-feature trigger is the mechanic the series is built around. When multiple firecracker colours land together, two of the three features, or all three, run in the same bonus round.

All three at once means a doubled 30-position board, a 4-count respin timer and random value boosts operating simultaneously. It is the game's rarest outcome and the reason the series exists.

There is no way to influence which features trigger or whether they combine. The firecracker colours that land on one spin tell you nothing about the next.

The Four Jackpot Tiers

Bao Zhu Zhao Fu carries Mini, Minor, Major and Grand jackpots, and the structure is worth understanding precisely because it differs from most jackpot slots.

Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Double Up bonus with two Hold & Spin grids and cash symbols
The Double Up feature splits the Hold & Spin bonus into two simultaneous grids, increasing the number of positions available during the round.

These are fixed values, not progressive pools. Nothing accumulates over time, nothing is shared across a network of players, and no total climbs in the lobby while you wait. The Grand Jackpot is 100,000 credits, and what that is worth in dollars depends entirely on your bet level, because credit value scales with stake.

The Grand is awarded for filling all 15 positions during an enhanced feature round. That is the rarest outcome in the game.

One point of difference worth flagging: Aristocrat's land-based cabinets in this series can run linked progressive jackpots. The online versions use the fixed tier structure described above. If you have played the machine on a casino floor, the online game is not identical in that respect.

Watch the Grand Jackpot Land

Filling all 15 positions during a combined feature round is extremely rare, and it is difficult to picture from a description of the mechanics.

The Four Variants, and Which Casinos Carry Them

Bao Zhu Zhao Fu is a series rather than a single title. Four games share the same engine and the same feature set, distinguished by theme and colour:

  • Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Blue Festival
  • Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Red Festival
  • Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Jade Celebration
  • Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Purple Celebration

Searching the name in a casino lobby returns whichever of the four that operator has licensed, and coverage is uneven. Here is what each carries.

Michigan gets more of the series than West Virginia. Caesars Palace and Horseshoe both carry all four variants in Michigan but only Red Festival and Jade Celebration in West Virginia. BetRivers shows the same pattern, dropping Blue Festival when you cross the state line. Purple Celebration in particular did not appear in any West Virginia lobby we checked.

Three of the casinos above were captured in their apps rather than a state-specific site, so the state column reflects where those operators are licensed rather than a per-state catalogue check. Their variant lists may differ between markets in the same way the others do.

Caesars Palace and Horseshoe in Michigan are the only lobbies carrying all four. They run on the same platform, which is why their catalogues and stake ranges match exactly in both states.

The DraftKings platform allows far wider stakes. DraftKings, Golden Nugget and FanDuel run builds to $240, $192 and $480, against a $96 ceiling on the Caesars platform. Since the Grand Jackpot is a fixed 100,000 credits and credit value scales with stake, the bet level changes what that tier is worth by a factor of five.

If you cannot find the exact Bao Zhu Zhao Fu slot online that you are looking for, the others play identically. The differences between Blue Festival, Red Festival, Jade Celebration and Purple Celebration are thematic rather than mechanical.

What the Numbers Mean in Practice

A few facts that help set accurate expectations about the slot machine Bao Zhu Zhao Fu:

  • The bet level does not change the odds. Every feature is available on every spin regardless of stake. A higher bet makes wins larger in cash terms and losing spins more expensive by exactly the same proportion.
  • Feature combinations are random. The stacked bonuses produce the game's biggest results, and there is no sequence of play, timing or bet pattern that makes them more likely.
  • Colour patterns carry no information. Which firecracker colours appear on one spin has no bearing on the next. Each spin is independent.
  • Medium-to-high volatility means uneven spacing. Long stretches without a feature are part of the design. A long wait does not make the next one more likely or larger.
  • The 95.40% RTP is a long-term average, and it is below 100%, which is what makes it a game rather than an investment. Over a large number of spins the design returns less than is staked.

About Aristocrat

Aristocrat is an Australian gaming company founded in 1953 and one of the largest slot machine manufacturers in the world. It is best known for land-based cabinets, and much of its online catalogue consists of games that started life on physical casino floors.

Bao Zhu Zhao Fu was developed with Gimmie Games and belongs to Aristocrat's Asian Festival family. The series draws directly on two of the company's earlier successes: Fu Dai Lian Lian, which established the Hold & Spin structure in this theme, and Mighty Cash Ultra, which contributed the Double Up mechanic.

Similar Hold & Spin Games

If the format appeals, several other games use the same core structure of locking cash symbols and a resetting respin counter.

Within Aristocrat's own catalogue, Fu Dai Lian Lian and the Mighty Cash series are the direct ancestors. Dragon Link and Buffalo Link use comparable hold-and-collect mechanics with linked jackpot tiers. Outside Aristocrat, Lightning Link, 88 Fortunes and Playtech's Fire Blaze range all build on the same idea with different modifiers.

What distinguishes Bao Zhu Zhao Fu within that group is the multi-feature trigger. Most Hold & Spin games run one modifier per round; this series can run three.

FAQ

What does Bao Zhu Zhao Fu mean?

It translates roughly as "firecrackers bring fortune," which is where the theme and the firecracker symbols come from.

What are the Bao Zhu Zhao Fu slot machine rules?

Each spin costs a fixed 48 credits across 25 paylines on a 5x3 grid. Landing enough cash symbols triggers a Hold & Spin round where symbols lock and a respin counter runs down. Filling all 15 positions during an enhanced feature awards the Grand Jackpot.

What is the Bao Zhu Zhao Fu RTP?

95.40%, a theoretical long-term average across a very large number of spins rather than a session expectation.

How is the Grand Jackpot won?

By filling all 15 positions during an enhanced feature round. The Grand is a fixed 100,000 credits, and its cash value depends on your bet level rather than on a growing pool.

Are the jackpots progressive?

Not in the online versions. Mini, Minor, Major and Grand are fixed credit values. Some Aristocrat land-based cabinets in this series do run linked progressives, which is a difference between the floor machine and the online game.

What are the three Hold & Spin features?

Ultra Spins boosts cash symbol values at random. Double Up splits the grid into two boards, raising the positions to fill from 15 to 30. Extra Spins resets the respin counter at 4 instead of 3. Two or all three can combine in a single round.

Is there a Bao Zhu Zhao Fu slot machine demo?

Availability of demo mode depends on the casino and the jurisdiction. Some lobbies offer a free-play version of the online game; others require an account.

What is the difference between the four variants?

Blue Festival, Red Festival, Jade Celebration and Purple Celebration share the same engine, features and jackpot structure. The differences are thematic. Caesars Palace and Horseshoe carry all four in Michigan; most other lobbies stock two or three, and West Virginia lobbies carry fewer than Michigan ones.

Which casinos have the Bao Zhu Zhao Fu online game?
